Following quick market success with its ERJ-135, -140, and -145 regional jet aircraft series, Embraer embarked on developing a new and larger family of aircraft with capacity from 70 seats and higher. The Brazilian manufacturer was able to win Switzerland’s Crossair as launching customer, which included an initial order for 30 aircraft, including 108-seat ERJ-190s and also the smaller ERJ-170 with a capacity for 70 passengers. The second ERJ-170 prototype with the Brazilian registration PP-XJC was therefore painted in the colors of Crossair. The first aircraft was to be delivered in 2004. However, due to the financial troubles and ultimate bankruptcy of Swissair, and the following taking over of that airline’s assets, a complete restructuring of Crossair was initiated. The up to then regional partner of Swissair was transformed into a new flag carrier, Swiss, through which the ERJs did not fit in with the new direction any longer, the order ultimately being cancelled as result.
