SAS Scandinavian Airlines

McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30

Founded on August 1, 1946 as a partnership to combine and facilitate the air traffic of the three Scandinavian countries Sweden, Denmark and Norway, SAS today looks back on eight decades of connecting the northern region to the world. Due to its geographic location, long-distance flights were always a major focus from the get-go. After realizing that the prestige offered by operating the Boeing 747 did not result in filling the capacity offered by the jumbo jet, SAS turned to McDonnell Douglas in the early 1970s and worked with the manufacturer and other European airlines such as Swissair and KLM to develop a transcontinental version of the DC-10. The trijet remained the backbone of the long-distance fleet through to 1991. Anniversaries are always a good time to look back to the history of an airline, and also to present a limited-edition model of such an important aircraft in SAS’s development. ,Founded on August 1, 1946 as a partnership to combine and facilitate the air traffic of the three Scandinavian countries Sweden, Denmark and Norway, SAS today looks back on eight decades of connecting the northern region to the world.
