The EL AL MD-11 played a unique, albeit brief, role in the history of EL AL Israel Airlines during the late 1990s and early 2000s. EL AL leased two MD-11 aircraft from World Airways, integrating them into its fleet primarily for long-haul international operations. The MD-11, developed by McDonnell Douglas, was a wide-body, long-range airliner known for its advanced avionics, greater fuel efficiency compared to earlier models, and substantial cargo capacity. Though it was not a permanent addition to EL AL’s fleet, the MD-11 served as a versatile solution during a period of increased demand for transatlantic flights and fleet optimization.
These leased MD-11s were primarily deployed on EL AL’s key long-haul routes, especially between Tel Aviv and major North American cities, including New York, Miami, and Toronto. Given the airline’s focus on serving the large diaspora of Israeli expatriates, business travelers, and tourists in North America, these routes were crucial for maintaining connectivity between Israel and some of its most important overseas markets. The MD-11’s range and capacity made it an ideal choice for handling high-demand periods and offering additional seating capacity during peak seasons.
Despite the aircraft’s relatively short service tenure with EL AL, the MD-11 played a significant role in filling gaps in the airline’s fleet as it awaited delivery of other long-range aircraft, including the Boeing 777s and additional 747s. It allowed EL AL to maintain its operational schedule and expand services without sacrificing performance. Passengers flying on these aircraft benefited from spacious seating and upgraded inflight amenities, making the long-haul flights more comfortable.
While the MD-11 was eventually phased out in favor of more modern and fuel-efficient aircraft, its presence during this transitional period helped EL AL maintain a robust international network, ensuring that the airline could continue to serve its growing global customer base. The use of the MD-11 is remembered as a chapter in EL AL’s journey toward becoming a world-class carrier capable of meeting the demands of an increasingly competitive aviation market.
