Founded back in 1988 to break Korea Air’s monopoly in South Korea, Asiana Airlines grew into an internationally renowned airline with over 90 international passenger as well as 27 cargo routes throughout Asia, Europe, and North America. Its cargo division operated up to 16 Boeing 747-400 freighters and a single Boeing 767-300 freighter. Following several years of struggling financially, the Kumho Group, owner of Asiana Airlines, agreed to a merger with its largest competitor, Korean Air. The purchase was completed at the end of 2024. By 2026, South Korea’s formerly number two airline will be fully integrated into Korean Air, ending the 38-year history of Asiana Airlines. To get approval for the merger and appease international concerns of creating a monopoly, Asiana sold off its cargo division to all-cargo operator Air Incheon, including the single Boeing 767 and eleven remaining 747 freighters, among them HL7616.
